Bringing dignity & Wealth Creation To Feed Families
The Nursery programme provides hope for the future of the children, but in addition it also frees up women’s time to learn something new. We wanted to take advantage of this to teach them a new skill – how to sew.
With so much clothing in Rwanda being made by hand, there is always a demand for somebody with skill to make or repair items of clothing. By teaching this skill we provide an opportunity to earn money and a way to escape the sex trade. We purchased six sewing machines for this project for training and currently a further machine is being hired for the classes which are led by a sewing tutor.
These classes are held alongside available counselling sessions where the women have opportunity to talk and receive advice prayer and help. Once these ladies are competent, they can join a sewing team learning to make washable sanitary protection for our freedom packs & school uniforms for the children in the Nursery.
All of this helps to build the women’s self-esteem. They enjoy the dignity of serving their community while earning money to feed their families the companionship the team provides them daily encouragement and as new friendships are made the community blossoms.
Currently Life Link Rwanda have chosen to take on 7 young girls giving them the opportunity of learning to sew alongside learning to care for their infant, with the provision of good nutrition, opportunity for counselling and discipleship. Most of these girls have been rejected from home and in difficult circumstances.
Mission24 LIFE has provided some grant funding towards this project and are taking baby clothes and toys for a creche being provided while the girls are learning to sew. If all the girls complete the course and graduate course, we hope to be able to bless each girl with their own machine as we have with others previously on the programme. The cost of a sewing machine is approximately £100.00 and materials £20.00.
Further funding is needed for this project to continue to change lives.
